Windsor Stands Behind Local News

Take a moment and read the article Bob Smith has posted on his blog: http://bobsmith55.blogspot.com/2009/03/windsor-stands-behind-local-news.html

For those who may not know Bob Smith, he teaches broadcast journalism at Fanshawe College in Southwest Ontario and is one of the most admired anchors on "A" News. Bob was part of the former "A" Morning crew and even though he is a London Knights fan, we still love him down here in Windsor!

As I stroll down the information highway picking up bits and pieces of independent perspectives regarding this issue, Bob's article sums it up very well for us.

Great article Bob and we are behind you and the "A" Crew even when the "A" disappears!

Boycott CTV and ANY Government Bailouts to them or CBC! Please join our Facebook Group and show your support!

  1. You should targetting the CRTC. Demand that the CRTC provide a regulatory system that allows private broadcasting in Windsor. You are off the mark completely by blaming CTV.

How would boycotting Chrysler keep Chrysler in Windsor? It makes no sense.

Call you MP and tell him or her to contact the CRTC and allow local TV stations in Windsor to charge cable and satellite companies, just like local TV station in Detroit can and do.

The CRTC killed commercial radio in Windsor in the 1970s and 80s, and now it is killing private local television by maintaining an out of date regulatory system that is trying to serve apples when people want and need oranges.

  2. What I am blaming CTVglobemedia for is their lack of commitment to our community. The fact is that they rebroadcast programs that we can already watch on Fox2, WDIV(NBC), WXYZ(ABC), WWJ(CBS) plus the smaller ones.

I don't buy the argument that because they can't charge cable and satellite companies, just like local TV station in Detroit, they can't compete.

Why didn't they open their eyes and look at the 4+ million viewers in Metro Detroit as a free demographic. If they would have worked at integrating into our market instead of giving us what Toronto wants, it would be different.

The CRTC is seriously outdated in their regulations but CTV knew the rules when they entered our market. They are responsible for their piss poor effort.

Funny how I come across other CTV stations from the GTA via cable and they promote themselves as LOCAL.

How local is Toronto to us in Windsor?
Are we really a suburb of London?

Maybe the University and St Clair College can get some federal funds to develop a public/private station.

Maybe the CRTC could get their heads out of their asses.

  3. Agreed the CRTC needs to get their heads out of their arses! A channels have seen an increase in viewers since CTV took them over, but they continue to lose money. THat is the issue... the CRTC is responsible for regulating the industry and it is doing a bad job and this is why local stations in Windsor are having problems. It is not about ownership, it is not about programming. It is about outdated regulations that are driving local TV out of Windsor, even the CBC.

  4. There is no disputing that the CRTC is outdated and a mess. But the situation has been worsened by the decisions of the CTVglobemedia management. If you know the deck is stacked against you why do you put all of your eggs in one basket. A lot of CTVglobemedia execs have made a lot of money over the past few years and most still continue to do so, while staions are closed and local programming is slashed.

What can we expect though, Windsor is used to putting all of our eggs in one basket. Can you say "Big 3"? I am sure the Government will bail 'em out to save the execs jobs and bonuses. They do deserve it, it must be hard for them to sleep at night with all of this downsizing. Yea right.
